The nuts and bolts

Search Engine Optimization or SEO is the method of modifying your website to be found in search engine results organically. Businesses aim to appear on the first or second page of search results, as most search users do not look beyond the second page. You can imagine that this is a highly competitive space as businesses are vying the same thing, but also trying to do so for free. You must also factor in other search results like showing up in the local 3-pack or as a quick answer when it comes to defining your SEO goals.

Search engine breakdown

The most popular search engine is Google, which claims 67 percent of all search users. The other most popular search engines are Bing with 18 percent of users and Yahoo with 10 percent. Since Google is the most popular, most businesses follow their guidelines for best SEO practices.

Changing trends

Three big changes happened recently in the SEO world. The biggest change was when Google started to rank websites that were optimized for viewing on a mobile device higher than those that were not. The second big change was the shift towards content marketing and away from optimizing content with specific keywords. The other big change was the shift away from buying domain names specifically to redirect to your current site, or parking a site, and having two sites with duplicate content.
