4 Ways We Tune Up Your Mailing List

4 Ways We Tune Up Your Mailing List

And like any vehicle, your mailing list needs routine maintenance. Failing to clean up your mailing list is like failing to inflate your car’s tires, change its oil or flush its radiator.

Routine maintenance is key

Consider companies like Bluegrass the equivalent of mechanics for your mailing list. When we check your mailing list regularly, it runs better and saves you money. A well-maintained mailing list saves money in several ways. Because these lists are accurate and up-to-date after we work on them, they earn you the best discounts available for bulk mail. And, because we eliminate addresses that are undeliverable, you aren’t wasting postage and printing.

Here’s what we do to keep your mailing list running like a finely tuned engine.

1. We update old addresses.

About 40 million Americans move every year. Because we have access to the United States Postal Service (USPS) office’s National Change of Address (NCOA) database, we compare our customers’ mailing lists against the USPS address change records. That keeps your bills and other mailings from going to the wrong place.

2. We get rid of duplicates.

If you buy several mailing lists for a direct mail campaign, it is almost guaranteed that there will be duplicate addresses. Sending the same person the same mailing twice or more wastes postage, printing and paper, and it also makes your company look inept.

3. We get rid of “dead” addresses.

Using merge and purge, we get rid of addresses that are no longer active because the resident has died. The Direct Marketing Association estimates that each year, 22 million pieces of mail are delivered to people who are deceased.

4. We make your list better.

We run your mail through CASS-certified software, which corrects bad addresses and zip codes and adds ZIP+4 and delivery point codes. When your addresses are CASS-certified addresses, you can use barcodes on your mail, which further automates your mailing and saves you more money on postage.

The USPS says it processes about 6.8 billion pieces of undeliverable mail each year. That’s a lot of waste. If your mailing list isn’t running like a well-tuned engine, your company is adding to the problem.
